Short answer: download the WebP file and convert it with a trusted local image editor, or use a browser extension that converts the selected image locally. Choose JPG only when you need broad compatibility and do not need transparency.

Why “Save image as” gives you WebP

The website usually decides which image format your browser receives. Modern sites often serve WebP because it can be smaller than an equivalent JPG. Renaming photo.webp to photo.jpg does not convert the image; it only changes the filename and can leave software unable to read it correctly.

Method 1: use a local image editor

  1. Save the WebP file normally.Right-click the image and choose the browser's Save image command.
  2. Open it in an editor that supports WebP.Use an application you trust on your computer.
  3. Export or save a copy as JPEG.Choose a quality setting appropriate for the image and keep the original WebP as a backup.

This is a good choice when you already have an editor installed or need to crop, resize, or adjust the image at the same time.

Method 2: convert from the browser menu

ImageMemento adds Save as JPG to the image context menu. It retrieves only the selected image after your command and converts it locally in the browser. If a separate image host blocks access, the extension may ask for permission to that specific host; you may deny it.

What happens to transparency?

JPEG does not support transparent pixels. Transparent areas must become a solid colour—commonly white. If the image needs a transparent background, save it as PNG or WebP instead.

Will JPG reduce quality?

Usually, yes. JPG uses lossy compression, so converting from WebP introduces another compression step. A high quality setting reduces visible damage but produces a larger file. Repeated conversions can make artefacts more noticeable.

Do not use online converters for private images by default.

An online converter must receive the file. For personal documents, private photos, or confidential material, prefer a reputable local application or a clearly documented local-only tool.

Common problems

The converted file still says WebP

Confirm that you exported or converted the pixels instead of only renaming the extension. Check the file type in your editor or file properties.

The background turned black or white

The original contained transparency, which JPG cannot preserve. Convert to PNG instead, or choose the desired background colour before creating the JPG.

The downloaded image is small or blurry
